Wilson, Horsey Named to 2020 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Watch List
Senior quarterback Terry Wilson and sophomore offensive guard Kenneth Horsey have been named two of the 53 players on the 2020 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award Watch List, it was announced today by The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in association with The Associated Press (AP) and the Fiesta Bowl Organization.
Wilson, a native of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, returned to play on Sept. 26, 2020 after missing most of last season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in his left knee on Sept. 7, 2019 vs. Eastern Michigan. The injury required surgery and months and months of grueling rehabilitation.
Wilson is currently 14-6 as UK’s starting quarterback and ranks second for wins as a starting QB, with starting lineups available since 1993 (19, Woodson; 14 Hartline; 14, Lorenzen; 14, Wilson). He also has 853 career rushing yards and ranks second behind Pookie Jones (854) for the most career rushing yards by a QB (min. 2,500 passing yards).
Horsey, who hails from Sanford, Florida, also has an impressive comeback story. In the spring of 2018, before he was to arrive at Kentucky for his freshman season, he was complaining of a pain in his side. His parents rushed him to the emergency room where doctors ultimately found a growth on one of his heart valves. He went through open-heart surgery on April 8, 2018 and was even told by a few doctors that football was over. However, Horsey would not be deterred. He came to Kentucky and redshirted the 2018 season with a goal of earning a starting spot on Kentucky’s offensive line, affectionately known as the “Big Blue Wall.” In 2019 he saw action in four games and he continued to train and prepare his body for the rigors of the Southeastern Conference. Since his surgery in 2018, he has lost 50 pounds and because of his hard work and dedication, has earned the starting left guard spot on the “Big Blue Wall.” He has started in all six games this season, helping the Wildcats ranks second in the Southeastern Conference in rushing offense (176.7).
There have been many changes to college football this season, so rather than recognize college football student-athletes from all divisions of play each week during the season, several watch lists of Division I football student-athletes playing in the fall are being issued throughout the season. The three overall winners will be announced timed with the 2020-21 PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl, held on January 2, 2021.
