César Bourgois to Return for 2020-21 Season
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following a Spring 2020 slate that concluded more than a month before postseason play had a chance to commence, Kentucky senior César Bourgois opted to return for the 2020-21 season on Wednesday.
Last March, the NCAA Division I Council voted to allow schools to provide spring-sport student-athletes impacted by COVID-19 an additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility.
“Being a Wildcat is super special,” said Bourgois. “I’m very excited to wear the blue and white for one more season.”
Bourgois is set to graduate from the Gatton College of Business & Economics this week with a degree in marketing. He became the fourth player in program history named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team in back-to-back seasons last April and was inducted into the Frank G. Ham Society of Character in January.
On the court, the 6-foot-4 native of Paris, France, led the Cats in both singles and doubles wins this spring. Bourgois began the year with a 5-3 record in singles play and a 6-1 mark in doubles last fall, going undefeated in both A Doubles competition at the Louisville Invitational and A1 Doubles at the Wake Forest Fall Invite.
He was 10-5 in singles dual matches, including a 1-0 resume in the No. 1 slot. Alongside freshman Liam Draxl, Bourgois posted a 7-3 record as Kentucky’s top doubles pair, complemented by a perfect 2-0 record when teamed with sophomore Ying-Ze Chen.
“I’m really excited that César is coming back,” said head coach Cedric Kauffmann. “As an upperclassman, he has made a big impact on our team culture. He is a wonderful student-athlete and a true Wildcat. This is why he is our team captain. I can’t wait to have him for one more season.”
