Abbey Cheek Wins 2019 NPF Batting Title, Rookie of the Year
LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky alumna Abbey Cheek took home some major hardware at the 2019 National Pro Fastpitch awards dinner, as she was named the NPF Rookie of the Year as well as the batting title winner – hitting a whopping .378 in her opening season in the league.
Helping lead the Chicago Bandits to the regular season title, Cheek led the entire league with a .378 average, was second with a .712 slugging percentage and finished tied for second with 28 RBI. The Inman, S.C. native was presented her award on Wednesday night in Rosemont.
“I’m really excited for Abbey that she was named the NPF Rookie of the Year,” Kentucky head coach Rachel Lawson said. “I was really happy to see that Abbey took all the hard work she put in during her time at Kentucky and applied them to the NPF. She had a stellar senior year and was able to carry that momentum into the summer. We are all very proud of her here at UK.”
Cheek in her senior season at UK was named the 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association National Player of the Year in 2019, in addition to being named the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Year and a first-team NFCA All-American.
