Yamada, Huempfner Win Respective Singles Draws in Cats Final Fall Event
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s tennis team wrapped up its final fall event over the weekend with some improved play at the Wake Forest Invitational with Kento Yamada and Kevin Huempfner both winning their respective singles draws and Theo McDonald making it to the semifinals of the A1 singles draw.
Yamada worked his way through the B1 draw as the No. 3 seed, picking up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Richmond, a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Tennessee Tech and a 6-0, 6-1 win to cap the final over USC.
Huempfner picked up four wins en route his claim of the C2 singles draw. The freshman took a 6-0, 7-5 first round victory over UNC-Greensboro before picking up a 6-4, 6-3 win on Friday. Huempfner filed a 6-2, 6-2 win over UNC-Charlotte prior to grinding out a three-set 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 win in the finals over Mercer on Sunday.
The Cats have concluded team action for the fall and will kick off the spring slate with dual meets beginning on January 13th in a double header with IUPUI at 1 p.m. ET and Northern Kentucky at 5 p.m.
