Troy Squires Named Candidate for 2018 Senior CLASS Award
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky senior catcher/first baseman Troy Squires was named one of 30 candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award for baseball, it was announced Wednesday. The award honors seniors who excel both on and off the field of play.
Squires, a 5-foot-11, 200-pounder from Elizabethtown, Ky., recently was named National and Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for his performance in a career week that culminated in a series win over No. 3 Texas Tech. He also was a Second-Team All-SEC selection on 2017, his first as a full-time starter.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C’s of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 College World Series® in June.
Squires recently was inducted into Kentucky Athletics’ Frank G. Ham Society of Character, which honors Wildcats who have shown an extraordinary commitment to academic excellence, athletic participation, personal development, career preparation and serving as a role model.
Squires has had a sensational start to the season, hitting .368 with 26 RBI and 11 extra-base hits with as many walks (10) as strikeouts (10) and nine hit by pitch. The 26 runs he has driven in through the first 21 games of the season already matches his 2017 season total.
