CLEMSON, S.C. – The Kentucky track and field teams picked up four event wins, and NCAA-leading mark and Timothy Duckworth leads the heptathlon following day one of the Clemson Invitational on Friday.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn was Friday’s highlight. The reigning Southeastern Conference 60-meter hurdles champion continued her strong form to start the season by running a personal best 8.00 seconds in her signature indoor event.
The junior won her race, improving her PB and this year’s early-season NCAA leader by .02 seconds.
Camacho-Quinn remained undefeated in 60m hurdles finals this season. The time improved her mark at No. 2 on the UK all-time performers’ list, and her Puerto Rican record.
Olivia Gruver, reigning National and SEC Athlete of the Week, won the women’s pole vault for the second weekend in a row and third meet this season. The 2017 NCAA outdoor champion and indoor NCAA and SEC bronze medalist cleared 14’2″/4.32m for a relatively easy win.
Daniel Southard won the men’s 5k with a nearly 11-second PB 14:42.00.
Michelle McKinney won the women’s mile in 4:51.83.
Duckworth leads his first indoor heptathlon of the season through four of seven events on 3511 points, more than 100 points ahead of second place.
He produced strong marks in all four events of Friday. He won the 60m (6.90 [918 points]) and long jump (25’6.25″/7.78m [1005 points]), and placed second to an Olympian professional (Maicel Uibo) in the shot put (42’11.5″/13.09m [673 points]) and high jump (6’11.5″/2.12m [915 points]).
Celera Barnes placed second in the 60m final with a season best 7.32. Kianna Gray was sixth in 7.43.
Matthew Thomas ran a six-second PB 4:10.58 to finish second in the men’s mile.
EJ Floréal won his 400m heat in 48.56, and placed 12th overall in his quarter-mile debut.
The meet continues Saturday. Adkins timing associates is handling live results.
Clemson, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, J.C. Smith, Penn State, Purdue and Virginia Tech are the teams at the meet.
Duckworth is actually ranked fourth in the nation in the open long jump this season having reached 25’4″/7.72m in December.
The Kentucky women’s team is ranked No. 9 in the preseason USTFCCCA rankings, while the men’s team is ranked 18th.
