KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Kentucky had the top collegian finishers in both the men’s and women’s javelins at the Tennessee Relays on Friday.
Ethan Shalaway won men’s competition with a season-best mark 223’6”/68.12m, after Sarah Blake finished as top collegian, second overall, in the women’s javelin.
Blake continued a strong string of results early this outdoor season. She broke her modern-era school record to start the season, 171’4”/52.23m, with a fourth-place finish at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in March, and followed that up with a second-place finish a week ago at Florida Relays.
Kimberly Hamilton, representing Nike, won with a mark of 181’0”/55.16m to beat Blake’s mark of 165’9”/50.52m recorded on her second attempt.
Amy Hansen won the women’s 3k steeplechase in 10:52.10.
Mick Iacofano ran a pretty big personal best: 14:26.97 to finish fifth in the 5k. Tanner Dowdy won the second heat to finish 26th overall in a PR time.
UK Class of 2015 Dezerea Bryant won the women’s 100m in 11.43 into a .03 headwind. She placed second in the 200m in 23.20 (+0.2).
The meet will be streamed live via SEC Network+ on WatchESPN/ESPN3 Saturday from noon until 4 p.m. UK’s only entries are in the discus on Saturday.
The meet features three top-25 men’s teams and five ranked women’s teams.
Duckworth set for 2017 decathlon debut this weekend
Elsewhere Tim Duckworth is set to contest his first decathlon of the season at Georgia’s Bulldog meet. Originally scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, the decathlon was rescheduled for Saturday and Sunday to avoid bad midweek weather in that part of the country as golf fans the world over have seen in recent days.
A year ago, Duckworth recorded a then-PR and the school record: 7585 while competing in the nationally elite Bulldog Decathlon. He used that performance as a springboard to fourth place at the SEC Championships, and then second-team All-America honors. He earned NCAA silver in the indoor heptathlon last month.
