Ryotaro Matsumura to Compete in USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships
FLUSHING, N.Y. – The No. 28 preseason-ranked singles
player sophomore Ryotaro Matsumura will represent Kentucky men’s tennis in the
USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, New York beginning
on Thursday, Nov. 3. The event is hosted by Columbia University and will take
place at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
Matsumura qualified for the event after becoming a national champion at
the Oracle ITA Masters when he took down No. 55 Shawn Hadavi of Columbia, 4-6,
6-3, 6-2.
To start the tournament, Matsumura will face No. 16 Wayne
Montgomery of Georgia on Thursday at 2:15 p.m. ET. Should Matsumura advance, he
will play either No. 4 Thai-Son Kwiatowski of Virginia or No. 14 Nicolas
Alvarez of Duke on Friday. The round-of-16 and quarterfinals will take place on
Friday, with the semifinals on Saturday. The event will conclude with the
finals on Sunday.
Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions
from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in
October, winners of the ITA Oracle Cup Super Bowl, and the consolation
champions, doubles finalists, men’s singles quarterfinalists and women’s
singles semifinalists from the ITA Men’s and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American
Championships.
The National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships
showcases elite players from every level of college tennis. The USTA/ITA
National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the
fall season. The prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a
20-team doubles draw for men and women.
