RIO DE JANEIRO – Kentucky Class of 2014 alumnus Andrew Evans was 16th overall with his 203-feet/61.87 meters discus throw at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad Friday.
Evans finished four spots, and 2’7.75”/0.81m, shy of advancing to Saturday’s final. He had the seventh best mark from group a.
“We were hoping the rain would hold off,” Evans said. “We had our warmup throws without any rain, then you start the competition and here comes the rain. Psychologically, keeps you down a little bit.
“I made decent moves in the ring and I’m happy with those. Just a few small degrees of change, and I could have seen a lot farther throws. 61.87(m): I’ll take it and hope that the second flight doesn’t go farther than that (remarks made before he was knocked down to 16th place once the second flight was completed).”
Evans was the first of six Wildcats with attachments to the UK track and field program who will compete at the Olympic athletics meet.
On Saturday UK alumnus Rondel Sorrillo – the 2009 NCAA 200-Meter Champion who now serves on the UK track and field staff as a volunteer assistant coach while training under head coach Edrick Floréal’s direction and competing for Nike – began his third Olympic Games.
He placed third in the second 100m heat in 10.23, .03 seconds off an automatic qualifier spot into the semifinals. He placed 29th overall.
Sorrillo is also scheduled to compete in Rio in the 200m and 4x100m relay.
The networks of NBC own the broadcast rights for the Olympic Games in the United States. All track and field at the games will be streamed live via
nbcolympics.com and the NBC Sports app. The 100m heats – the first rounds of an event widely considered the marquee event of the Olympic Games — are slated to be broadcast on NBC on Saturday during the daytime window.
Evans is the lone Wildcat on the 2016 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team. He placed third in the discus at Olympic Trials. Evans capitalized on a solid throw of 200-feet, 10 inches/61.22 meters on his first attempt to make the team at Trials last month in Oregon.
Wildcats Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico), Leah Nugent (Jamaica), Sorrillo, Luis Orta (Venezuela) and Mikel Thomas (Trinidad and Tobago) are also competing in athletics at the Rio Olympic Games.
Camacho-Quinn will complete her standout freshman season at the Games. She, and alumni Nugent and Sorrillo all train at Kentucky under head coach Edrick Floréal’s direction.
The athletics portion of the Olympic Games will run from Friday until Sunday, Aug. 21, which is the day of closing ceremonies.
