LEXINGTON, Ky. — Down to its last strike in the ninth inning, Anderson Miller pulled a game-tying two-run homer, and in the 10th inning Harrison Scanlon’s two-strike, two-out run-scoring triple lifted Western Kentucky to a 5-3 win over Kentucky, on Tuesday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

WKU scored two runs in the ninth to tie the game behind Miller’s homer and would score two runs again in the 10th to take the lead. The loss for the Wildcats drops them to 19-16 while the Toppers improve to 17-16.

Kentucky jumped out to an early lead with a two-run first inning, with WKU answering on the strength of a homer from Scanlon in the third. The game went into the eighth inning 2-1 before UK got an insurance run heading to the ninth. Down to its last strike in the ninth, Miller — a product of Lexington’s Lafayette High School — ripped a two-run homer to tie the game and in the 10th inning, also down to its last strike, Scanlon then delivered the go-ahead RBI triple for the win.

UK totaled eight hits in the game, with Evan White, Ka’ai Tom and Zach Arnold each charting two knocks. Kyle Barrett added a 1-for-3 game, with Marcus Carson ripping a double. UK got RBI in the first inning from Dorian Hairston and Storm Wilson.

The Wildcats got on the board right away to start the game scoring two runs in the first inning. Barrett led off with a single to left center and White singled as well. JaVon Shelby walked to load the bases. Hairston also walked bringing in the first run of the night. Wilson hit his fourth sacrifice of the season bringing home White.

Western Kentucky got its first hit and run in the top of the third off a Scanlon home run to dead centerfield. The Hilltoppers threatened to score again but stranded two runners off of three hits.

Kentucky would not score again until the bottom of the eighth inning after a Tom leadoff double and advanced to third on a Shelby groundout. Tom would score off a wild pitch increasing the UK lead to 3-1.

Jack would come into close during the bottom of the ninth with one out but the Hilltoppers rallied back. Leiff Clarkson singled to right field with two outs left. Miller ripped a line drive home run down the rightfield line to tie the game at three, good for his ninth homer.

WKU would score two runs again in the top of the tenth. Ryan Church singled through the left side. He would then advance to second off a sacrifice bunt and third on a fly out to centerfield. Scanlon tripled to left center scoring Church. Paul Murray would then hit a double down the right field line scoring Scanlon increasing the Hilltopper lead 5-3.
