LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky junior right-hander Kyle Cody has been named a Louisville Slugger third-team preseason All-America by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, it was announced on Friday morning.
A 6-foot-7, 245-pounder, Cody had a 4-0 record and a 2.84 ERA as a sophomore in 2014, leading UK with five saves in 18 games and six starts. In his two-year career, Cody has a 7-3 record and a 4.05 ERA in 33 games and 16 starts, working 95.2 innings, walking 33 and striking out 67. In 14 Southeastern Conference games in his career, Cody has a 3.18 ERA, with three saves in 34 innings.
Cody, a native of Chippewa Falls, Wis., is coming off a breakout summer in the Cape Cod League, earning a starting pitching nod in the 2014 CCBL All-Star Game. Cody made nine starts in the Cape, with a 2-3 record and a 2.72 ERA in 36.1 innings, walking just 11 and striking out 34. Cody finished the summer ranking eighth in the circuit in strikeouts and 10th in ERA.
As a freshman in 2013 for the Wildcats, Cody had several standout moments, including working a 2.96 ERA over his last four starts, featuring three SEC starts. Cody worked 6.1 innings in a win at No. 9 Louisville, six innings at Western Kentucky and quality starts vs. No. 14 Arkansas and No. 1 Vanderbilt.
In 2014, Cody started the season in the weekend rotation, before resting for 21 days due to a minor injury. Cody returned to the pitching staff to make 12 consecutive relief appearances, before posting strong starts at Georgia in the final weekend of the regular season and working 5.1 innings vs. No. 7 Florida in the SEC Tournament.
Since 1999, 10 different Kentucky players have earned preseason All-America honors, including in three consecutive years. Cody is the third UK pitcher since 1999 to earn preseason All-America honors.
