LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky senior shortstop Matt Reida drove in four runs and had three hits, including the walk-off single to lift his Blue squad to a 9-8 win over Black in eight innings, on Thursday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Reida smacked a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Blue to the 9-8 win, in a game scheduled for seven innings. With the game tied 5-5 heading into the top of the eighth inning, Black mounted a three-run rally to take an 8-5 lead. Reida then stepped up with two outs in the bottom of the eighth with the bases juiced, smashing a single to score the walk-off run. The Russiaville, Ind., native went 3-for-5 with four RBI, with a pair of doubles and steals.
Blue was led at the plate by Reida, with the club also getting a 3-for-4 game with a walk from Kyle Barrett. Junior A.J. Reed belted a homer in his 2-for-4 game, with Dorian Hairston, Bryce Bastein, Tyler Tipton and Tyler Marshall each charting two hits.
Black was paced by a 3-for-4 game from freshman infielder Connor Heady, a member of the 2013 USA National 18-U Team. Heady launched a homer and scored three runs, with Black also getting two-hit games from Austin Cousino and Micheal Thomas. Ka’ai Tom, Max Kuhn, Storm Wilson and Troy Squires each contributed hits.
On the mound, Blue started Kyle Cody, who worked 4.1 innings. Dylan Dwyer follower with 2.2 innings and Zach Strecker picked up the win with the final three outs. Black started lefty Sam Mahar, who struck out four in four innings. Freshman lefty Logan Salow struck out six in three innings, allowing just one hit. Sophomore lefty Ryne Combs took the loss with the final four runs.
The Fall World Series will resume with a seven-inning game on Friday, at 2:05 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The three-game series will conclude on Sunday at approximately 12:15 p.m. ET.
