LEXINGTON, Ky. – Anthony Rossi, Tom Jomby and Kevin Lai saw their seasons come to an end on Thursday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill.
In singles, Anthony Rossi fell in three sets to No. 30 Andre Dome of Cal Poly, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3. Rossi dropped the first set before rallying to force a decisive third set for a spot in the Sweet 16. In the second set, both players held serve all six times as the tiebreak would decide the set. Rossi jumped out to the early mini-break lead at 3-1 and held serve the rest of the way to take the tiebreak, 7-5.
To start the final set, Dome held serve for the 1-0 lead, and then the rains came when Rossi was facing a break point. The match was then moved to the indoor facility, where the rest of the match was played out. Rossi got broken and that break lasted Dome for the rest of the match.
Rossi finishes his career as one of the most decorated players in UK tennis history. He finishes with 106 career wins, which is in a tie for 12th all-time. In addition, Rossi’s career winning percentage of .769 is second all-time only behind Eric Quigley in UK history.
In doubles first-round action, Tom Jomby and Kevin Lai saw their season come to a close with a tough two-set defeat, 6-4, 7-6. Jomby and Lai were up 5-0 in the second set, including a double-break lead but were unable to serve out the set and Georgia State rallied to take the set 7-6 in a tiebreak.
