LEXINGTON, Ky. — Paced by freshman catcher Greg Fettes’ second consecutive perfect day at the plate, White posted a 3-2 series-evening win over Blue in the second game of the Kentucky Baseball Fall World Series, on Saturday morning at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Fettes paced White to the series-evening win with a 3-for-3 game at the plate, after going 3-for-3 on Friday afternoon in the series opener. He was joined by senior outfielder Zac Zellers, who went 3-for-4 to help spark the eight-hit White attack. White also got hits from J.T. Riddle and Jeff Boehm, with Jacob Russell adding a walk.
Blue collected five hits, with freshman outfielder Kyle Barrett going 2-for-3. Blue also got hits from Matt Reida, A.J. Reed and Thomas Bernal, with Micheal Thomas adding a walk.
For Blue, Corey Littrell worked 3.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs – one earned – not allowing a walk and striking out five. With two runners on and two outs, sophomore right-hander Taylor Martin replaced Littrell and got a first-pitch out to escape the inning. A native of Lexington, Ky., Martin tossed the final 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run, striking out two.
On the mound for White, Chandler Shepherd worked 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and two runs – one earned – not issuing a walk and striking out four. Freshman right-hander Tyler Cox took over with one out in the bottom of the fifth, getting two outs to escape the jam. Cox, a product of Dunbar High School, picked up the save by hurling the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one walk and striking out four.
The series will conclude the fall practice season on Sunday, with a 12:15 p.m. ET first pitch at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
White took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, as Zellers led off with a double laced into the gap in right-centerfield. Riddle followed and hit a grounder to second base to allow Zellers to move to third but the throw to first sailed high for an error, allowing Zellers to score and Riddle to advance to second.
Blue immediately rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Reida led off with a single smacked through the right side. Reed then singled through the right side to put runners on first and second with no outs. Bernal, hitting No. 4 in the order, faked the bunt and lined a single to rightfield, with the ball sliding under the glove of the outfielder for an error, allowing Reida to score. Shepherd then got Thomas to hit a roller to Max Kuhn at shortstop, who despite playing at normal depth threw to the plate to get Reed for the first out and bring up Dorian Hairston. Shepherd fielded a comebacker, throwing to Kuhn to start a 1-6-3 double play to escape the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Blue evened up the game, as Zach Arnold led off the inning with a first-pitch hit by pitch. Storm then singled to rightfield to push Arnold to third base. After a Barrett strikeout by Shepherd, Witt hit a slow roller to Kuhn at shortstop who bobbled it for an error, with Arnold scoring.
White took the lead in the sixth inning, as Riddle led off the frame with a double laced over the head of the rightfielder. Kuhn then moved Riddle to third base with a fly out to rightfield and Paul McConkey scored Riddle with a groundout to second base with the infield playing in.
