Freshman stars Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Anthony Davis carried Kentucky in a victory over rival Louisville on Saturday. On Monday, the two roommates are being honored for doing so. The Southeastern Conference announced its Player and Freshman of the Week on the second day of 2011, with Kidd-Gilchrist and Davis each earning one award.Kidd-Gilchrist is the Player of the Week following a 24-point, 19-rebound outburst on Saturday, but that wasn’t his only strong performance over the past seven days. He tallied a then-career-high 18 points to go with six rebounds against Lamar, giving him weekly averages to 21.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists.Davis is the SEC Freshman of the Week after two games with averages of 14.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, six blocks, 1.5 steals and one assist. He registered double-doubles in both games, including 18 points and 10 rebounds vs. Louisville. He battled foul trouble in the first half and scored all of his points after halftime. Davis also took two more big steps forward in his quest to break the UK single-season record for blocks, swatting six shots in each of the two games. The honors don’t stop there.Andy Katz dubbed Kidd-Gilchrist the national player of the week in ESPN’s Weekly Watch column, saying this about him:
I was in the studio Saturday night, and every time we ran through the Kentucky-Louisville highlights, MKG was in the middle of an offensive play. Kidd-Gilchrist was really something special in UK’s rivalry win. He played 39 minutes, scored 24 points and grabbed 19 — yes, 19 — rebounds in the Cats’ 69-62 victory over the Cardinals. Kidd-Gilchrist also scored 18 points in limited time against Lamar earlier in the week. Kentucky coach John Calipari has plenty of options offensively but doesn’t always know what he’s going to get from each player. He knows what he’s going to get from Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. The freshman forward, a constant bundle of energy, continues to be one of the toughest matchups at his position with his length and ability to put the basketball on the floor. The races for SEC player of the year and SEC and national freshman of the year are just beginning. MKG is making his case to be included in both of them.
Davis was also named in the “More performances that wowed us” category.
