LEXINGTON, Ky. — Paced by solid air rifle scores from Henri Junghänel and Stacy Wheatley, the Kentucky rifle team posted a 4669-4626 win over Great American Rifle Conference foe Nebraska, on Sunday afternoon at UK’s Barker Hall.
“This was a great opening weekend for our season,” UK assistant coach Stacy Underwood said. “It’s always good to finally start shooting matches after you’ve been training for so long. This weekend showed us what is working and where we need to place out focus for the remaining fall matches.”
Kentucky (2-0, 2-0 GARC) rode strong scores from Junghänel and Wheatley to the win, getting a match-best 595 from Junghanel and the second consecutive 590 or better from Wheatley in air rifle. UK also got air rifle totals from Ethan Settlemires (581), Heather Greathouse (583) and Katie Fretts (586).
In smallbore, UK was led by sophomore Emily Holsopple, who charted a 584 to lead the team, with Junghanel totaling a 583. Wheatley tallied a 570 in smallbore, with Settlemires and Greathouse each totaling a 574.
“We have a week to focus on a few things before our match on Sunday against Memphis,” Underwood said. “We can tweak a few things to improve performances from top to bottom and post another great team performance.”
Kentucky returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 30, hosting Memphis at UK’s Barker Hall.
Among the other shooters on the roster, UK got solid performances in smallbore from Fretts (572), Jonathan Pinkel (574), Ethan Marne (550), Elijah Ellis (570), Cody Manning (565), Ed Ryznar (563) an James Jasis (574). In air rifle, Pinker (571), Marne (562), Ellis (587), Manning (581), Ryznar (582) and Jasis (578) rounded out UK’s roster competing on Sunday.
