LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky rifle standouts Heni Junghänel and Emily Holsopple – two key cogs in the UK 2010-11 Rifle NCAA Championship – performed well at a pair of different individual competitions.

Junghänel competed at the ISSF World Cup Sydney 2011, totaling an 1160 in the 3×40 competition, a bronze medal in the prone smallbore category with a 596 and a 595 in air rifle. With the 595 in air rifle, Junghänel pushed himself into contention to make the finals.  In his 1160 score in the men’s 3×40, Junghänel was shooting to have a qualifying score that would make him eligible for the Olympics.

“I was real excited for both,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “Both performances were on grand stages. Henri doing what he did was really good, but for him to be in the shoot-off to make it into the final is very impressive. He put himself in position to make the finals. When he made the prone final, I think he was the youngest guy in there by nine or 10 years. From Henri’s perspective it was a good performance. I am very glad and excited for him to continue down his path of pursuing his dreams.”

Holsopple competed at the 2011 USA Shooting National Junior Olympics, taking the title in the women’s 50m smallbore three position. Days after winning the women’s 10m air rifle vent, Holsopple entered the final two points ahead of the competition (1170 points) and secured the win with a 98.5 score in the final. Holsopple’s performance in the 10m rifle event was extremely strong, totaling 791 qualification points after two 400-point rounds. With a strong final of 103.1 points, she secured the Gold medal and the title of Junior Olympic Champion with an 894.1 total score.

“For her to win both, in that field, is really good,” Mullins said. “She had a couple of first-team All-Americans in that field. She stepped up to the plate and did a great job. To win both events is a great accomplishment. The competition in both events was really strong. I was very proud.”
