Each Wednesday here at Cat Scratches, we’re going to take a look back at the latest week’s news in UK Athletics from around the web.Best on the ‘netMen’s basketball: Freshman help UK survive Harrellson’s Senior Night (Brett Dawson, Louisville Courier-Journal)Kentucky led Vanderbilt by 11 points at halftime Tuesday night, but coach John Calipari told his Wildcats in the locker room to brace for a second-half battle. The Cats got one. For a change, they survived.UK held off the Commodores 68-66 in front of 24,275 fans on Josh Harrellson’s Senior Night, winning for the first time in seven tries this season in a game decided by five points or fewer.Men’s basketball: Jorts comes of age on Senior Night (Matt Murray, Kentucky Kernel)Harrellson ended his season in Rupp the same way he started it, having fun and joking with teammates. As the final second ticked off the clock and UK had secured a 68-66 win in its final home game, Harrellson’s playfulness and emotion collided as he wiped away tears and danced with his teammatesWomen’s basketball: Mathies stays cool in clutch (Jennifer Smith, Lexington Herald-Leader)A’dia Mathies could be the star of a deodorant commercial.Kentucky’s sophomore guard is “never let them see you sweat” personified.Whether the opening tip is in the air or the game is on the line, her demeanor never changes. She seems to stay calm, cool and collected no matter what.UK Athletics: UK to establish athletics oversight committee (Cheryl Truman, Herald-Leader)The University of Kentucky will establish a committee to examine the oversight of the athletics department, UK president Lee T. Todd Jr. and Britt Brockman, chairman of the board of trustees, said on Tuesday.Brockman said he hopes the committee will provide a clear idea of how UK compares in athletics oversight among benchmark schools in the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.Baseball: Alex Meyer’s stock rising (Jason Churchill, ESPN – Insider only)Alex Meyer, RHP — KentuckyMeyer has hit triple digits as recently as a scrimmage this winter and possesses a power slider that invokes swings and misses at a high rate. Meyer, at 6-9 and 220 pounds, also creates sink on his fastball, and more maturity and toughness this season could do wonders for his draft stock, potentially thrusting the right-hander into the top 10 if things fall his way. He got his season off to a decent start Sunday, mowing down 13 over seven innings versus Miami (Ohio). Meyer will face top overall prospect Anthony Rendon and Rice early next month and will be challenged each week by most SEC opponents.Men’s basketball: Kentucky basketball, all-access, part one (Matt Jones, CBS Sports)Pro scouts watching practice is a constant at Kentucky. The majority of practices are watched by at least one pro scout and that number increases the day before a game. Players are aware that it is not only a chance to warm up for their next college game, but also an unofficial audition for the next level. For many of these scouts, what they view in practice is equally, if not more, important to what they see in a game and thus focus is imperative not only for the team, but the individual players’ futures as well.Former Wildcats making headlinesRandall Cobb could rise up draft boards (Frank Tadych, NFL.com)(O)ne prospect who might have helped himself is Kentucky’s Randall Cobb, who ran faster than most expected with a 4.45-second 40-yard dash. An NFC scout described Cobb as “competitive and scrappy” and said he graded out as an “A-plus character guy.”Because of his size — 5-foot-10 1/4 and 191 pounds — Cobb projects as a slot receiver in the NFL. He also could make an impact in the return game and as a Wildcat QB.Derrick Locke a draft “riser” (Tony Pauline, SI.com)Derrick Locke/RB/Kentucky: Locke disappointed no one with his performance. He ran both two sub-4.4 40s, hitting 4.38 on some watches. He was also fast during the practice session and showed the ability to maintain his speed when asked to change direction or run through the cutback lanes. He’s being compared to Dexter McCluster in some circles.Thunder’s Nazr Mohammed familiar with trades, success (Berry Tramel, The Oklahoman)Six years ago Thursday, Gregg Popovich traded for a starting center, made him a backup and gave him 18 minutes a game the rest of the season. The San Antonio Spurs went on to win the 2005 NBA title.Thursday, the Thunder traded for a starting (mostly) center, made him a backup and probably will give him about 18 minutes a game the rest of the season.Same guy. Nazr Mohammed.Wall named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month again (NBA.com)Wall led all Eastern Conference rookies in scoring (16.5 ppg) and assists (7.9 apg), and was fifth in rebounding (4.9 rpg). He eclipsed the 20-point mark on four occasions, tops among Eastern Conference rookies, and dished out 10 or more assists five times. He currently ranks sixth in the NBA in assists (9.0 apg) and is on pace to become the first rookie to average at least 9.0 assists since Damon Stoudamire in 1995-96.Chuck Hayes dominates on boards in Rockets’ win over Cavaliers (Mary Schmitt-Boyer, Cleveland Plain-Dealer)The box score from the Cavaliers’ 124-119 loss to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night at The Q was a tribute to Houston’s Chuck Hayes. Hayes had a career-high 13 offensive rebounds, a season-high 17 total rebounds and set three arena records for rebounds.News from UKathletics.comWomen’s basketball: Dunlap, Mathies and Pinkett named to All-SEC teamsMen’s basketball: Knight, Jones-2011 award candidates (UK Interactive)Rifle: Top 10 moments of 2010-2011Baseball: Taylor Black named SEC Player of the WeekGymnastics: Wildcats turn in solid road performanceVideo of the weekI’m not sure many people outside of the Big Blue Nation could tell you what “Jorts Day” is, but everyone in blue knew just what it was last night. The Kentucky Wildcats sent lone senior Josh Harrellson off with a big 68-66 win over Vanderbilt.
