LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky junior right-handed pitcher Alex Meyer has been rated as the 21st-best college baseball player, in a preseason ranking of the top-100 college draft-eligible players by Baseball America.

A native of Greensburg, Ind., Meyer was tabbed as the 21st-best overall player in college baseball and as the 13th-best pitching prospect. Among right-handed pitchers, Meyer ranks No. 8 and among Southeastern Conference players, Meyer checks in No. 4.

Meyer, a 6-foot-9, 220-pounder, has made 25 appearances with 22 starting assignments during his two-year career, tossing 110.2 innings, with 143 strikeouts and a 6-7 record. Last season, despite missing much of the season due to illness, Meyer tied for the team lead with five wins, striking out 63 in 51 innings.

Meyer had several strong starts in 2010, including seven innings in a win against eventual NCAA Champion South Carolina, striking out six without allowing an earned run in his first start after missing three weeks with mononucleosis. In a win over Ole Miss, Meyer struck out 10 in 6.2 innings.

An Aflac and Louisville-Slugger All-American in high school, Meyer was rated as the fifth-best high school prospect in his high school class out of Greensburg High School. The Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year, Meyer struck out 108 in 51 innings with an 8-0 record and a 0.95 ERA as a senior. Following his high school senior season, Meyer was a 20th-round selection in the 2008 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox.
