LEXINGTON, Ky. — Behind senior Logan Fox’s team-best 592 in air rifle, the Kentucky rifle team opened its 2010-11 season with a 4655-4647 win over Murray State, on Friday at UK’s Barker Hall.

Kentucky (1-0) rode the standout performance from Fox, who had a 592 to pace the team in air rifle and a 580 in smallbore, second best on the club. Freshman Emily Holsopple tallied a team-best 581 in smallbore, adding a 588 in air rifle, second-best on the team. Holsopple’s 581 in smallbore was a match-best.

“It went well for the first match of the year,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “We always want our numbers to be higher and the match was a close and came down to the wire. We learned a lot about our match nerves compared to the nerves we go through in training. I was pleased with the work the team gave, the work didn’t reflect in the numbers but if we keep working and grinding it out we can get our numbers up.”

The Wildcats got solid scores from Ethan Settlemires, who totaled a 571 in smallbore and a 585 in air rifle. Megan English finished with a 572 in smallbore and a 578 in air rifle. Sophomore Katie Fretts finished with a 581 in air rifle and a 575 in smallbore. In addition, Stacy Wheatley had a 577 in smallbore and a 587 in air rifle.

“Logan (Fox) had a great match and so did Emily (Holsopple),” Mullins said. “And then on the second relay, Stacy (Wheatley) had a 577 (smallbore) and a 587 (air rifle) and that was great to see. I am really pleased with some of the individual performances. The team learned a lot of themselves and their shot plans today. We are eager to get back out on Sunday and face Army.”

UK will open conference play on Sunday, hosting Army at UK’s Barker Hall.
