UK Soccer Renews Border Rivalry with Indiana

LEXINGTON, Ky. — With a win under its belt, the Kentucky women’s soccer team (1-0-0) can now focus on the renewed border rivalry with Indiana, set to take place Friday at the UK Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. ET.
The Wildcats and Hoosiers have not met since the 2002 season, but that match took place in Columbia, Mo., The two programs haven’t met on either team’s home field since 2001.
The Hoosiers lead the all-time series with the Wildcats 4-3-1, but the Cats did claim a 3-1 victory in the 2002 meeting.
“It’s an obvious game for us to play,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said. “We’re in the Midwest, in the south, we want to play both. We’re obviously spending a lot of time playing in the SEC and we love that, on our Bermuda fields and being able to knock it around. But we have to understand that we have to play the Midwestern teams that historically are maybe a little bigger, a little stronger; it’s a good test. It’s a different style of soccer and it’s something that really pushes us to see if we can handle any style that will come to us during the season.”
Both teams enter the match winning their season openers, by a combined 7-0 score. UK defeated Coastal Carolina 4-0; Indiana beat Evansville 3-0.
“We know they’ll be very well coached and very well organized,” Lipsitz said. “I’ve known (Indiana head coach) Mick (Lyon) their coach for a very long time, he’s tremendous. They’re going to be ready, there’s no doubt about that. They’ve had a great start to their season, we know they’re going to be strong; they’re going to be physical. They’re going to be playing a shape that’s going to be different from what we’ve played against usually. It’ll be a great test for our experienced players to be leaders and our freshmen to still be able to play fast. What we’ve been working on is, `whatever you see, play fast, keep the ball moving’ and that’s our style of play.”
In their season-opening victory against Coastal, the Wildcats were impressive on both sides of the ball. UK tallied 17 shots (compared to 16 combined shots in their first three games last year) and 12 corner kicks, while the defense recorded the shutout and held Coastal to just six shots.
Kelsey Hunyadi leads the Wildcat charge with four points on two goals, while freshman Taylor Parker has three points off a goal and an assist. In goal, Sydney Hiance has three saves and a perfect 0.00 GAA. The senior goalie ranks fourth in five different all-time categories including GAA (1.25), Saves (188), minutes played (4378:52) and shutouts (15).
