The 28th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis team lost 6-1 to No. 18 North Carolina Saturday at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (0-2) never got on track against the Tar Heels (1-0), dropping all three doubles points and five of six singles points.
Junior Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) earned Kentucky’s lone victory, posting a 7-5, 3-6, (10-2) win against No. 100 Katrina Tsang at No. 1 singles.
Sophomore Caroline Lilley (Portland, Ore.) fought hard at No. 2 singles, before losing to No. 25 Sanaz Marand. Lilley won the first set 7-6 (4), lost the second set 7-6 (3) and dropped the super tiebreaker 10-4.
UK senior Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio) lost in straight sets to UNC’s Jelana Durisic 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. UK junior Lauren Meier lost 6-1, 6-0 to Zoe De Bruycker at No. 5. UK freshman Elle Coldiron lost 6-0, 6-0 to Shinann Featherston at No. 6.
Kentucky began the match by losing to three ranked doubles teams to surrender the doubles point. UK’s Lilley and Johnston dropped an 8-1 decision to No. 6 Sophie Grabinski and Marand at No. 1. UK’s Meier and Broderick fell to No. 22 Tsang and Featherston 8-4 to give UNC the doubles point. UK sophomore Minnette Pienaar (Graaf-Reinet, South Africa) and Coldiron lost to No. 28 Jocelyn Ffriend and Haley Hemm 8-2.
Kentucky travels to Athens, Ga., to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, beginning Friday, Jan. 30. The Wildcats will take on Southeastern Conference foe Alabama on Friday and either Georgia Tech or Arizona State on Saturday.
