LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky’s A’dia Mathies (Louisville, Ky.) was named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced Monday.

Mathies, a 5-9 guard, received the honor after averaging 10.0 points, 5.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in UK’s two wins last week. She scored 11 points and handed out a game- and career-high seven assists in the 107-53 rout of Miami (Ohio). She then grabbed a career-high four offensive rebounds in the 68-57 win at Cincinnati, helping the Cats improve to 8-0 on the season.

Overall, Mathies is UK’s second-leading scorer and third-leading rebounder, averaging 12.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She has scored in double digits six times this year and is the only Wildcat to average 30-plus minutes per game (30.5).

This is the fifth year the SEC has recognized a Freshman of the Week award. The weekly award marks UK’s seventh SEC Freshman of the Week, its first this season and first since 2007-08.

The Cats return to action Sunday, Dec. 13 vs. Florida A&M at 1 p.m. EST in Memorial Coliseum. The game will be televised live on the Big Blue Sports Network and FSN South.
