LEXINGTON, KY – The UK women’s soccer team (5-8-4, 2-6-1 SEC) dropped its final home match of the season, 4-1 to the streaking Ole Miss Rebels (11-3-2, 5-1-2).
The Wildcats were unable to match the Rebels quickness and offensive attack, allowing the most goals they’ve allowed all season.
“We lost to a better team,” said UK head coach Jon Lipsitz. “We lost to a team that outplayed us in every facet of the game. One of the things we know about us as a group, is that for us to be successful as a team, each player has to come and play at the top of her ability. We have to have an edge about us and if we lose any bit of that edge, we really don’t have anything to fall back on. Today we came out and did not have that edge, and did not play well and got punished by a very well coached and very talented team.”
Dylan Jordan and Hannah Weatherly both had two-goal nights for Ole Miss who outshot the Wildcats 20-5.
Ole Miss drew a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute off Jordan’s first goal of the match. Jordan took a pass from Kelsey Breathitt and fired a wide open shot from 15 yards out past UK’s Sydney Hiance.
Jordan tallied her second goal of the night in the 53rd minute when Arielle Cohen pushed a ball through the UK defense to Jordan who beat Hiance, one-on-one for a 2-0 Ole Miss lead.
The Rebels collected an insurance goal three minutes later when Kelsey Breathitt centered a pass in front of the Kentucky goal and Weatherly finished for her seventh goal of the season and first of the night.
Laura Novikoff cut into the Ole Miss lead in the 65th minute when the Rebels were whistled for a hand ball in the box. Novikoff took the penalty kick and put it to the right of Rebel goalie Alley Ronaldi for her second goal in as many games.
Ole Miss slammed the door shut in the 79th minute on Weatherly’s second goal of the night. Weatherly took a pass from Jordan and connected on a shot from 18 yards out, just inside the left post.
Novikoff led the Wildcat offense with two of UK’s five shots. Hiance finished with four saves.
Kentucky closes out weekend action on Sunday at Mississippi State. The Cats are 8-2-0 against the Bulldogs and 4-1-0 in Starkville.
