BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Andy Adlard netted a goal in each the first and second half to lead the No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers to a 3-0 win over the No. 13 Kentucky men’s soccer team, on a chilly Tuesday night in front of 1,631 fans at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana (5-2-1) broke open a scoreless game with Adlard’s first goal, coming in the 30th minute. Adlard sealed the game with his goal in the 61st minute and Nick Blevins put the game out of reach with an IU goal in the 64th minute.
Kentucky (7-2-0) suffered its first non-conference loss of the year, and just its second loss in the last 18 games, dating back to October 2008. IU outshot UK 13-8, with UK owning a 9-7 corner kick advantage, including seven corners in the second half. UK’s other loss on the year came in double-overtime against Marshall in the conference opener.
UK goalkeeper Dan Williams saved four shots, allowing a season-high three goals. Indiana keeper Luis Soffner totaled two saves in his 90 minutes of action.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday afternoon, hosting conference foe UAB at the UK Soccer Complex.
IU still leads the all-time series, 15-1-2, with UK’s last win coming in 1995. UK owns a 2-8-1 all-time record against IU in games played in Bloomington.
Indiana took the lead in the 30th minute, as Eric Alexander served the ball into the UK box, looking for Adlard, who headed the ball into the net, past a leaping Williams.
In the 61st frame, Rich Balchan fed Adlard on a run down the sideline, with Adlard firing a shot that found the lower right corner of the net.
IU added to its lead in the 64th, as Will Bruin dished the ball to Blevins, who found himself open in the box, firing a shot past Williams.
In the 69th minute, Byron Vega gave UK a great chance, chasing the ball down at the end line and lofting a cross into the box for C.J. Tappel. Tappel dished it to Burns, who returned it to Tappel, who fired a low shot that missed just wide.
David Harrison had a good chance for UK late in the half, firing a long-range shot from 40 yards out, just missing high. Harrison and Tappel led UK with two shots each.
Preseason first-team All-American defender Barry Rice won 6-of-7 contested header attempts in the game, bringing his season total up to 65-for-78. Last season, Rice won 189-of-218 contested header attempts, an 87-percent clip.
