LEXINGTON, Ky. — Former Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon was selected by the Washington Redskins in the third round of the National Football League supplemental draft on Thursday, according to the team’s website.
Jarmon played in 38 games during the last three seasons, including 31 starting assignments. His best attributes are his ability to rush the passer and his knack for knocking down passes. He made 38 tackles as a junior, including 10 for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks, along with six pass breakups. He was named second-team All-Southeastern Conference by Phil Steele’s College Football.
In 2007, Jarmon was first-team All-SEC by Rivals.com and second-team All-SEC by the league coaches when he had 62 tackles, including 13.5 TFL and nine sacks. He had 17.5 sacks in his career, third in school history.
Jarmon played a key role in one of the most successful eras in UK football history. The Wildcats won a bowl game in each of his three seasons, defeating Clemson in the 2006 Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, Florida State in the 2007 Music City Bowl and East Carolina in the 2009 AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
“I just spoke with Jeremy and I’m very excited for him,” UK head coach Rich Brooks said. “It’s a great thing for him to be selected that high in the supplemental draft. Washington is one of the teams that brought him in for a workout and personal interview. Obviously, they saw the same things in him that we saw at UK.”
Jarmon completed his degree in political science in May. After his football career, he hopes to get involved in public service, perhaps in politics, the FBI or CIA. The multi-talented Jarmon also is a budding actor, having played a lead role in campus productions at UK and at Houston High School in his hometown of Collierville, Tenn.
Jarmon becomes the ninth player from the 2008 Wildcat squad to earn a chance to play in the NFL. Defensive tackle Myron Pryor was a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots during April’s regular draft. Free-agent signees included defensive end Ventrell Jenkins (Buffalo), cornerback David Jones (Baltimore), linebacker Braxton Kelley (Denver), punter Tim Masthay (Indianapolis), free safety Marcus McClinton (New England), offensive tackle Garry Williams (Carolina) and linebacker Johnny Williams (Jacksonville).
Kentucky’s presence in the NFL has increased dramatically over the last two years. Seven seniors from the 2007 team were drafted or were free-agent signees, six of whom made an active roster or practice squad.
