Coach Rich Brooks kicked off the annual “Big Blue Crush” blood drive by giving a pint of blood Thursday afternoon at the Kentucky Blood Center in Lexington.
The Big Blue Crush is taking place Monday, Nov. 17, through Friday, Nov. 21, and is the annual competition that pits University of Kentucky fans against University of Tennessee supporters to see who can give the most blood.
“What we need is numbers to win the battle,” Brooks said. “We can outnumber ‘em, we can outdonate ‘em, and that isn’t very hard. All you have to do is show up and these wonderful people will take care of you.
“We’re heading into the season of giving — Thanksgiving, Christmas. And this is something that’s very easy to give because all it takes is some time, and not all that much time. It’s important that everybody gives back and this is one of the best ways because you can actually save lives by doing this.”
All donors receive a Big Blue Crush T-shirt and gift from McDonald’s.
Donors who give on Monday, Nov. 17, can register to win two tickets to the UK-Tennessee game and an overnight stay at the Crowne Plaza in Knoxville on Sat. Nov. 29. On Tuesday, donors can register for a Cat Fanatic Package, which is loaded with UK items.
Big Blue Crush helps ensure an adequate blood supply for patients during the holiday season. Last year, Tennessee won the competition, which generated a record-breaking 6000+ units for Kentucky and Tennessee hospitals. Tennessee leads the contest, 10-9, with one tie.
