WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshmen Caroline Lilley and Jennifer Stone won two qualifying matches to push them into the main draw of the Southeast Regional tournament joining three other members of the Wildcat squad. The round of 64 begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET on the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center courts.
Kentucky newcomer Lilley defeated UNC-Greensboro’s Arielle Van Strolley in a three set showdown during the first round of qualifying. The Spartan won the first set, 6-3, but Lilley took the second and third sets, only surrendering three games for a 6-1, 6-2, victory. The Wildcat maintained a short second round for a two set win over Natalie Pluskota of Tennessee, 6-2, 6-3. Lilley will begin her main draw run against ETSU’s Tara Byrne
UK’s Stone found her way into the main draw after defeating Natalia Baez of Louisville, 6-2, 6-3, and Eastern Tennessee State’s Paula Jamie, 6-3, 6-4. Kentucky’s Greensboro, N.C., native is set to face Elon’s Anna Milian in the first round of main draw action on Friday.
Joining the freshmen in the round of 64 are No. 55 Megan Broderick, No. 118 Christine Johnston and senior Carolina Escamilla.
Stone and Lilley also paired up for doubles and advanced themselves to the round of 32 after earning an 8-5, win over Elizaveta Zaytseva and Paty Coimbra of Winthrop. The freshmen duo faces the eighth seeded Federica van Adrichem and Jesipa Bek of Clemson who had a bye during the first round.
Kentucky’s number one tandem and the tournament’s fourth seed, No. 16 Escamilla and Johnston had a first round bye but will take to the service line opposite the Tarheel’s Jocelyn Ffriend and Hanes Harris. The Wildcats’ third pair of Broderick and Meier, retired.
