LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Former University of Kentucky men?s tennis player Tigran Martirosyan won the USTA Freeman Men?s Futures Tournament at the Millennium Tennis and Fitness Club in Joplin, Mo., last weekend. The 2005 grad defeated Florida State rising junior Jean-Yves Aubone 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 in the final.
Martirosyan, seeded seventh in the 32-player singles draw, used an early break of Aubone?s serve to go up 4-2 midway through the opening set. Two games later, the former Cat broke Aubone again with a passing volley shot and then held to serve out the first set, 6-3.
At 1-1 in the second set, the opponents battled through a five-deuce game eventually won by Aubone. The Seminole used that momentum to break Martirosyan?s serve and hold his own to take an early 4-1 lead. However, the UK alum fought back to knot the score at 4-all. The pair split the next two games before Aubone held serve for a 6-5 lead and eventually broke Martirosyan for the 7-5 set win.
A quarterfinalist last season at Millennium, Martirosyan broke Aubone early and rolled to a 6-0 victory in the third.
?My game plan was to start off strong and not to miss many balls,? said Martirosyan, ?I was determined to not give him any free points and look for my opportunity to attack.?
The victory was Martirosyan?s first Futures championship and second title in two weeks after winning the doubles title the previous week in Peoria, Ill., with partner Marcus Fugate of Rochester, N.Y. Martirosyan currently lives in Boston where he teaches tennis at the Westboro Tennis and Swim Club.
