Men's Golf

The University of Kentucky men?s golf team wrapped up play today, April 14th, with a 4th-place finish at the UK Bluegrass Invitational. The Wildcats shot a team score of 301 to finish with a three-day total of 916. The University of Central Florida took home the title with a team score of 899 at the University Club.

Western Kentucky?s Brent Long edged out Kentucky?s Brian Belden (Emmaus, Pa.), who competed as in individual play, by one stroke in a playoff to win medalist honors with a three-round score of 219 (71-75-73).

Junior Andy Winings (Brownsburg, Ind.) led the Cats in team play with his 10-over par score of 223 (71-73-79) for the cold two-day tournament.

Sophomore Alex Volpenhein (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) tied for 19th after shooting a three-over par 74 on the final day of play. Senior Cale Barr (Versailles, Ky.) posted the best third-round score for the Cats as he fired a 71 to finish tied for 24th overall with a 231 (81-79-71). Senior Brad Doster (Winter Park, Fla.) tied for 53rd overall with a score of 236 (82-77-77), while Ben Fuqua (Danville, Ky.) finished tied for 77th with a total of 245 (79-86-80).

Kentucky played a team of four individuals that fired a 908 to finish with the second best overall score for the tournament. Brian Belden shot a 219 (73-74-72), freshman James Kania Jr. (Haverford, Pa.) hammered down to finish with a 225 (79-72-74), sophomore Derek Oldham (Lexington, Ky.) carded a 231 (80-73-78) and sophomore Jordan Blann (Bowling Green, Ky.) 233(80-78-75).

Brian Belden and Andy Winings tied with Western Kentucky?s Brent Long for most pars in the tournament with 37.

The Wildcats return to action Apr. 18-20 at the Southeastern Championships in St. Simon?s Island, Ga.
