LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Freshman Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) of the UK women?s tennis team was named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday morning. In the inaugural year for the honor, Broderick has received the distinction for the third time this season and the only women?s tennis player this year to win an SEC award three times. The freshman currently holds a 17-4 singles record.
In the Wildcats? last two home matches, the No. 25 Kentucky hosted No. 10 Georgia on Friday evening and No. 17 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. UK split the matches, falling to UGA 5-2 and upsetting the Lady Vols 5-2.
During the contest between the Bulldogs and Kentucky, Broderick and freshman doubles partner Alaina Trgovich secured the doubles point for the Cats. After courts one and two split, the decision remained with three. Broderick and Trgovich defeated Cameron Ellis and Adrienne Elsberry in a tie-break, 9-8 (7-1), for the doubles points. In singles, Broderick stepped up to the number one position to face No. 69 Kelley Hyndman of Georgia. After winning a two hour first set, the Florida native kept the momentum to take the second round for a 7-6(8-6), 6-3 result.
Sunday?s match was a critical win for the entire Kentucky team, upsetting Tennessee. Broderick and Trgovich were once again the key to the doubles point for UK. On court two the duo toppled Ghizela Schutte and Rosalia Alda of UT, 8-5. Broderick dominated her court one singles match against No. 51 Caitlin Whoriskey, allowing only two opponent points. The Wildcat freshman took the match to a 6-0, 6-2 decision, helping the Cats overthrow the Lady Vols.
Broderick has been ranked as high as No. 95 in singles and No. 50 in doubles with junior Carolina Escamilla. The Kentucky freshman was last named SEC Freshman of the Week for the first time on February 18 and then again two weeks ago on March 25.
