LEXINGTON ? The 28th-ranked Kentucky women?s tennis team cruised to back-to-back 7-0 blankings over Eastern Kentucky and Cincinnati in an afternoon doubleheader at the Boone Tennis Center on Wednesday.
The wins snap a four-match skid for UK, which improved to 17-5 on the season. That mark includes a stellar 11-1 mark at home. The Colonels fell to 11-10 while the Bearcats dropped to 10-7.
?The team had a solid day,? Kentucky head coach Carlos Drada said. ?We worked on a lot of fundamentals that we have been working on in practice. Today will help us build and get ready for the weekend.?
The Wildcats shuffled their lineup for the matches, resting some team members for Saturday?s regular-season finale against Vanderbilt. In the shutouts, seniors Caroline Winebrenner and Kim Coventry each scored a pair of singles wins, as did sophomore Jessica Giuggioli and freshmen Whitney Spencer and Christine Johnston.
Senior Joelle Schwenk scored a point for UK against EKU at No. 2 while freshman Sarah Woestmann filled the slot in the night cap against UC.
Johnston improved to 6-1 in dual play this season and Winebrenner moved to 4-0 on the year in dual play. Coventry, Woestmann and Spencer each ran win streaks to three.
Kentucky dropped just a single set on the afternoon, but Johnston came back to win a super tiebreaker in the third to take that match. Other than that, the Wildcats were rarely threatened in either singles or doubles. It was the third time this season UK has swept a double header, the other two coming in late January.
Kentucky returns to action on Saturday at Noon when they meet the Commodores. It will be Senior Day for three athletes as Coventry, Schwenk and Winebrenner compete at home for the final time in their UK careers.
