LEXINGTON ? The 23rd-ranked Kentucky women?s tennis team pushed No. 4 Florida to the limit, but watched its upset bid fall by the wayside in a 4-3 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Boone Tennis Center.
The Wildcats got upset singles victories from Kim Coventry and Sarah Woestmann on courts two and three to go along with a win from Whitney Spencer at No. 6, but needed four singles victories to score the victory after losing the doubles point to open the match.
With the loss Kentucky fell to 15-5 on the year and 6-4 in the Southeastern Conference. The Gators improved to 17-1 and 8-1 in the conference.
?We played a really tough opponent today,? Kentucky coach Carlos Drada said. ?I am excited with the momentum we gained today. That?s going to help us increase our level for the end of the season and to accomplish our goals.?
Woestmann dropped the 94th-ranked Nina Suvak, 6-3, 6-4. It was her second ranked win in four matches after also taking down No. 61 Yvette Hyndman of Georgia. Woestmann improved to 18-2 in her career. Her win was UK?s first point of the match and cut the Gators lead to 2-1.
After 18th-ranked Diana Sebrovic downed No. 110 Joelle Schwenk at No. 1, Coventry, playing No. 2 for the second straight match, dropped 20th-ranked Megan Alexander, 6-4, 7-6 (4). It was her biggest win of the year and the first ranked foe she?s beaten this dual season.
Down 3-2 with the first four matches in the books, UK needed to win on both five and six. Due to playing indoors, the final two matches were in each in the first set after Coventry?s win and Florida took the opening set on both.
Spencer was able to rally for a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8) win over Whitney Benik at No. 6, but that was only after Jessica Giuggioli fell to No. 68 Csilla Boryanski on court five, 6-4, 6-3. Boryanski?s win sealed UF?s victory.
Florida won the crucial doubles point with wins on all three courts.
Kentucky returns to action with a double header against Eastern Kentucky and Cincinnati on Wednesday.
