LEXINGTON ? Kentucky senior women?s tennis players Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk moved one spot closer to a No. 1 ranking on Wednesday, taking over the No. 2 position in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.

Coventry and Schwenk, who won the ITA Southeast Regional Doubles Championship in the fall and advanced to the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships, sport a 13-2 overall record this year. The duo has beaten five teams currently ranked in the top 32 of the country, including three in the top 12. The pair was ranked third in the first spring rankings early in January.

Coming up next on Coventry and Schwenk?s slate is a likely battle with the 22nd-ranked team of Gabriela Duch and Shadisha Robinson of South Florida. Last year, Duch was part of a doubles tandem that eliminated Coventry and then-partner Carolina Escamilla from the NCAA Doubles Championships in the round of 16. The loss came two months after Coventry and Escamilla had beaten Duch and Neyssa Etienne in a dual match.

As a team, Kentucky dropped to No. 30 overall in the rankings after suffering its first loss of the season, a road defeat to Indiana. The Wildcats have since rebounded to dominate rival Louisville, 6-1, on Tuesday.

South Florida is ranked 32nd nationally and presents Kentucky a chance for its fourth win over a ranked foe this season. The match is slated for 4 p.m. Friday at the Boone Tennis Complex.
