CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? Anchored by a dominating bottom half of the line up, the 20th-ranked Kentucky women?s tennis team cruised to a 5-2 road win over No. 26 Harvard at the Murr Center on Friday morning to run its record to 5-0 on the year.
The Wildcats remained perfect after five games for the sixth time since 1992 and the fifth since 1999. Kentucky has now opened 5-0 in both of head coach Carlos Drada?s two seasons at the helm. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday when they face Brown at Providence, R.I., in the second match of a four-game road swing. With a win, UK would be off to its best start since 1990.
“Our team worked with great focus in today?s match,? Drada said. ?We are proud with the way we competed and we?re looking forward to doing so again (Saturday). ”
The match wasn?t nearly as close as the final score indicated with UK scoring three 6-0, 6-0 victories from Sarah Woestmann, Jessica Giuggioli and Whitney Spencer in the bottom three spots of the singles lineup. The double-bagel was the third straight for Woestmann.
Senior Joelle Schwenk, ranked 60th nationally, recorded a stunningly easy 6-0, 6-1 win over 80th-ranked Lena Litvak. It was her third win over a ranked for this year. In dual action, she has dropped only 11 games en route to a 5-0 mark at No. 2.
Both of Harvard?s points came via wins in third-set super tiebreakers. After dropping the first set on court three, Carolina Escamilla rallied to force a third only to fall in the tiebreaker and losing 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (6). At No. 1 Kim Coventry also lost in a third set, dropping a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4) decision to 16th-ranked Beier Ko,
Kentucky swept three doubles matches to win the doubles point and gain an early 1-0 lead. UK has won the doubles point in all five matches this year. Wildcat duo?s are 13-2 in dual doubles matches this year.
