BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Jerson Monteiro headed home the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute to lift UAB to a 1-0 overtime upset of 18th-ranked Kentucky on Saturday night at West Campus Field.
Two-Boys Gumede started the play with near the end line on the right side. He crossed right across the goal, but no Wildcat was able to punch it out and the ball found Dejan Jakovic on the left side of the box. He immediately crossed back and Monteiro got a head on it inside the goal box close to the far post for the goal.
The loss was UK?s third this year in overtime, two of which have come on the road. The Wildcats, who fell to 9-4-1 overall and 2-2 in Conference USA, struggled throughout the game playing without defenseman Nathan Li and midfielder Jase Griffiths due to injuries.
However, that wasn?t the source of the problems. Kentucky?s attack fired off just eight shots and put only two on goal. It was the third time in the last five games UK has been shutout.
The Wildcats best opportunity of the game came in the 86th minute on a dangerous cross by Masumi Turnbull that Nathan Marks headed over the crossbar from eight yards out.
UAB had a golden chance earlier in the second half, but Lucasz Kwapisz?s offering from 20 yards out careened off the right post.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Huntingdon, W.Va. to face Marshall.
