LEXINGTON — For the second straight season, the Kentucky baseball team will be represented at the USA Baseball National Team Trials as Collin Cowgill was one of 15 players invited to the tryout on Thursday.
Cowgill, a Lexington native, had a stellar sophomore campaign, belting 16 home runs and driving in 61 while batting .298 for the year. He also smacked 15 doubles and scored 62 runs. Defensively, he was excellent, recording three outfield assists.
It is the second honor this week for Cowgill, who was named first-team All-South Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Monday.
The 15 players invited on Thursday bring the total players trying out to 35 with 22 making the squad. The trials are held from June 24-July 1 in conjunction with the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Team USA will compete in the 35th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate Championship Series and in International friendship series versus Chinese Taipei, Germany and Korea. The summer ends in Havana, Cuba at the III FISU World University Championship where the USA is the defending gold medalist.
Last year, second baseman John Shelby earned an invite to the USA National Team trials, but failed to make the squad after battling a nagging injury.
