GREENVILLE, N.C. ? The University of Kentucky cross country teams competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional Saturday. Senior Allison Grace paced the women?s team, finishing 13th en route to earning all-region honors for the second straight season, while junior Jonathan Thomas led the men with a 78th-place finish.
Earning all-region and finishing in the top-15 for the second consecutive season (10th, 2004), Grace carried the women?s squad on the 6K course with a 13th-place individual finish (20:41). Grace looks probable for a second consecutive NCAA Championships berth but will wait until tomorrow evening for final word. Following Grace with her best performance of the year was sophomore Liliane Sparkes, who came in 30th with a time of 21:17.
Sophomore Georganne Way was the third Wildcat to cross the tape, coming in 62nd (22:06). Sophomores Lavera Morris (95th, 22:46) and Andrea Brown (108th, 22:54) rounded out the UK scorers. Freshman Andrea Halasek also competed, finishing 113th. As a team, the women finished in ninth out of 28 teams. No. 1 Duke came away with the team crown while also finishing 1-2 individually. Blue Devil Shannon Rowbury won the title with a time of 19:55.
On the men?s side, Thomas, a junior from Frankfort, finished with a time of 32:13 (78th) on the 10K course. Sophomore Andre Silva followed closely behind in 92nd with a time of 32:26. Senior Andrew Thompson ran his final collegiate cross country meet, finishing in 117th, with a time of 34:31.
The men?s individual title went to sophomore Josh McDougal of Liberty, who claimed the crown for the second consecutive season. McDougal broke the course record with a time of 29:40. William & Mary won the team title, followed by Virginia and NC State respectively.
In each regional race, the top two team finishers and top four individuals not on a qualifying team automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for Mon., Nov. 21 at Indiana State University?s LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Another 13 at-large teams and two at-large individuals will be added to the 31-team, 255-runner M&W fields on the evening of Sun., Nov. 13 by the NCAA Championships selection committee. At-large team selection criteria is based on teams? head-to-head records against other actual and potential NCAA qualifiers.
