Kentucky made its first appearance in the finals of a relay event, and two swimmers added individual All-America honors on day one of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday in Minnesota?s University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
Kentucky?s 200-freestyle relay quartet of seniors Tim Patrick and Clay Gasparovich and juniors Daniel Farnham and Steven Manley became UK?s first first-team All-American relay squad by placing fifth with a time of 1:17.66. The team qualified for the final with a third-place preliminary time of 1:17.48, which will stand as the new school record. The team broke its record set at the SEC Championships by 77 one-hundredths of a second. UK placed 10th in the event at the 2004 NCAA Championships.
Patrick and Farnham contributed honorable mention All-America finishes in the 50 freestyle. Patrick tied for eighth in the preliminary round with a time of 19.45, beating his record set last month by 23 one-hundredths of a second. Patrick was forced to compete against California?s Rolandas Gimbutis in a tiebreaker for the final spot in the final, which was won by Gimbutis, sending Patrick to the consolation final. Patrick, who essentially was swimming his fourth 50 freestyle of the day, placed 14th in the final. Farnham, who surpassed Patrick?s previous-record time in the preliminary round, took 16th in 20.10.
Manley added a 44th-place showing in the 500 freestyle, and UK?s 400-medley relay team of sophomore Alejandro Bravo, freshman Kristian Outinen, senior Daniel Cruz and Farnham was disqualified during the preliminary round.
Kentucky is slated for participation in six events Friday on day two. The preliminary round begins at 1 p.m. EST, while the finals are set for 8 p.m. EST.
