MAMARONECK, N.Y. ? Kentucky?s John Holmes won his first round of match play in the prestigious U.S. Amateur Championships Wednesday with a birdie on the 19th hole. Holmes, a Campbellsville, Ky., native was three holes up on Brady Myers through the 11th but bogeyed the final three holes to force a playoff.

Holmes continues match play Thursday against Tom Glissmeyer of Colorado Springs, Colo., who beat Auburn All-American Lee Williams Wednesday. The match is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. The tournament is being televised on ESPN2.

Holmes made the first cut by shooting a pair of 2-over-par rounds during Tuesday?s stroke play. Holmes tied for eighth and was seeded 11th as the field was cut to 64 golfers to begin match play.

Play will continue through the weekend as Holmes continues his quest for a U.S. Amateur title.
