Juniors John Holmes and Matt Wells each eagled the par 5 17th hole Thursday to keep Kentucky in 2nd place on day three of the NCAA Championships in Hot Springs, Va. The Cats shot a three-over par 283, giving them a +12 score for the tournment. UCLA is in first with a +7.
The Cats started the day in second, one stroke behind California, but had slipped as low as sixth as Kentucky players began to finish their round. Holmes (71-69-67=207) and Wells (68-68-68=204) finished strong for UK with threes on the par-5 17th. As of 2:30 p.m. ET, Kentucky seems all but assured a spot in tomorrow’s final round, where the top 15 teams following the third found will compete for the NCAA Championship.
Holmes finished the day with a 3-under 67 and stands at -3 for the tournament, good enough for seventh place in the individual standings. Wells showed his consistency by carding his third consecutive two-under par 68, landing him in 3rd place with a -6.
