Lexington, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team evened its record at 4-4 on the season with a thrilling 108-102 overtime victory over the visiting Miami (Ohio) Redhawks on Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.
Senior guard Rita Adams led the Cats with 29 points, including 22 after halftime, as the Cats erased a 53-41 halftime deficit. Kentucky trailed by as many as 18 in the game, but managed to storm back, hitting seven of the eight three-point shots they attempted after the break. UK shot an impressive 11-for-14 from three-point range for the game. Its 11 threes were a season-high.
“I was very pleased we were able to comeback, especially with the 17 turnovers in the first half,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “Most importantly was the courage the team displayed to be able to fight back.”
Adams and Potts each hit two three-pointers inside the last 2:20 of regulation to force the game into overtime with the score knotted 92 apiece. Potts finished with 21 points and was 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Freshmen Jennifer Humphrey and Jenny Pfeiffer had 15 and 14 points, respectively. Humphrey had her first career double-double as she added 11 rebounds.
“Those three-pointers were huge,” Mattox said. “We weren’t able to get it going in the first half because our shooters couldn’t get open looks. In the second half, we were knocked them down.”
Colleen Day led four RedHawks in double-figures with 22 points. Jana Butler followed with 20 while Beth Roederer and Heather Cusick added 16 and 13 points, respectively.
The Wildcats will return to action on Monday, Dec. 23, when they play host to Morris Brown at 7 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum.
