The Kentucky men’s soccer team defeated IUPUI by a tally of 4-0 Sunday at the UK Soccer Complex. Junior Nathan Fleetwood scored the game-winner, with insurance goals coming from freshman Dani Kamras and sophomores Olli Lehtimaki and Jamal Shteiwi. The victory was the 101st UK win for Coach Ian Collins.
The Wildcats dominated the run of play for most of the match. They first got on the board at 21:21 when Fleetwood scored off a set-piece from freshman Jani Modig, who tapped the indirect kick to Fleetwood just outside the penalty arc.
UK padded its lead in the 42nd minute. A goal kick was headed by freshman Anthony Peters to senior John Monebrake, who found a streaking Kamras on the far post to give the Cats a 2-0 lead.
The second half was much of the same for Kentucky. The Cats found themselves on the doorstep of the goal in the first minute of the period. IUPUI keeper Dave Palmer saved a Dani Kamras shot, but no one could control the rebound. The ball eventually found its way to Shteiwi, who put it in the back of the net.
In the 89th minute, Lehtimaki added the fourth and final goal of the match when a shot by Monebrake was deflected to him on the goal line.
Today’s match marked the third shutout of the year for Kentucky’s Greg Raber. The Jaguars only managed three shots on goal, two of which were cleared off the line by UK defenders.
“It was good for us to score the four goals,” Collins said. “We created a lot of chances and could have scored a couple more, but it’s a good to get the shutout. We can take this win and move on to our match against intrastate rival Louisville on Wednesday.”
The Wildcats return to action Wed., Oct. 2, when they travel to Louisville to face the Cardinals at 7:00 p.m.
