Greg Raber, a junior goalkeeper on the University of Kentucky men’s soccer team, was selected Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Oct. 29.
“This is a well-deserved honor for Greg,” Coach Ian Collins said. “Since entering the lineup, he has been very solid for us. His play has definitely been one of the keys to our recent success.”
Raber, a Raleigh, N.C., native, collected his sixth win making four saves in the Wildcats’ 1-0 victory over No. 15 Furman at the Florida International Invitational on Oct. 26. Raber’s shutout marked the first time this season that the nation’s top-scoring offensive team was held scoreless. He collected four more saves against Florida International and earned Defensive MVP honors at the Invitational.
This season, Raber has seen 630 minutes of action with a 0.43 goals-against average, surrendering just three goals and gathering 17 saves.
Raber is the third Wildcat to receive the honor this season, joining Antti Peltonen and John Monebrake, who each earned the distinction earlier this season. Kentucky is the only MAC school to produce three different players of the week in 2001.
Raber leads the Cats back into action on Saturday, Nov. 3 when they host MAC-rival Akron in a match that will decide the league’s regular-season champion and No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.
