The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team had a successful day at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional on Friday, Oct. 26, in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Wildcats advanced four singles players into the round of 32 and boast two doubles teams in the Sweet 16.
Seniors Carolina Mayorga and Lauren Rookledge, along with juniors Sarah Witten and Leigh Bradwell, moved into the second round of singles play. Mayorga, Rookledge and Bradwell were all able to tally straight-set wins. Witten was also impressive by battling from a set down to defeat North Carolina’s Kristin Koenig 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Witten and Mayorga, the region’s second-seeded doubles team, and the duo of Amy Trefethen and Jill Buckley advanced to be among the final 16 pairs left in the doubles draw. Both tandems head into the quarterfinals after scoring easy wins over teams from Winthrop and Campbell respectively.
Both singles and doubles action will continue on Saturday, Oct. 27, on the campus of Wake Forest University. Matches will begin at 8 a.m.
