May 22, 2001

University of Kentucky track and field athlete Simidele Adeagbo has been named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District IV first team for her achievements in and out of the classroom.

The team consists of athletes from the spring sports of crew, golf, lacrosse, tennis, track, volleyball (men) and water polo (women), and honorees are selected by a district vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America based on athletic and academic accomplishments during the past season.

Adeagbo, a Louisville, Ky., native, is one of UK’s top horizontal jumpers this year. During the indoor season, she broke the school triple jump record with a leap of 43-04.50 at the NCAA Indoor Championships to finish fourth and claim her first All-America honor. She also finished sixth in the long jump and third in the triple jump at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships, while picking up sixth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump at the SEC Outdoors.

A journalism major, Adeagbo’s work in the classroom has earned her selection to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll and the Dean’s List. In 2000, she was named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar, and this past year she was named a PNC Bank UK Scholar-Athlete of the Week.

The Verizon Academic All-District Team is part of the Verizon All-America? program. First-team selections will appear on the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America? University Division Spring Women’s At-Large Team.
