(Nov. 15, 2000) — The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team has signed two high school seniors to play basketball for the Wildcats next season, Coach Bernadette Mattox announced on November 15.
Keiko Miller-Tate of Clarksville, Md., and Rochester Hills, Mich., native Sara Potts inked national letters of intent to play for the Wildcats for the 2001-02 season.
Miller-Tate, a 6-2 forward from River Hill High School, is one of the nation’s top-50 recruits with an average of 13.2 points,7.4 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game as a junior. As the team’s leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, she was a candidatefor Clarksville’s Player of the Year last season and was named first-team All-County and second-team All-Metro. Miller-Tatehelped guide the Hawks to the County Championship and a 22-0 record in 1999-00 and was later given the RHHS Most ValuablePlayer Award and the Maryland Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Future Star Award.
In her sophomore season, Miller-Tate was the leading scorer and rebounder for RHHS, averaging 13.2 points, 8.2 reboundsand 2.0 blocks per game. She was chosen her team’s MVP and was named second team All-County.
“Keiko will bring size, mobility and scoring power on the inside,” Mattox said. “She also is going to be a great defender at thecollege level and we are really excited about her becoming a Wildcat.”
Potts, a 6-0, southpaw swing player at Rochester High School, is a finalist for Michigan’s Miss Basketball honor after averaging23.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game as a senior. Michigan high schools began their basketball season in August. Potts’ teamwent 14-7 before being eliminated in the Class A district playoffs. She also ended her senior season averaging 4.3 steals and 3.2assists per game while setting three school records: most points in a career (1,300), most three-pointers made in a game (six) andmost defensive rebounds in a game (12).
As a junior, Potts averaged 14.0 points per game and was named first-team All-League and All-County. She also washonorable mention All-State.
“Sara will be an excellent three-point threat with the size and versatility to play inside or out,” Mattox said. “She plays with agreat deal of intensity and reminds me of Connecticut’s Shea Ralph.”
