(Nov. 5, 2000) — The University of Kentucky rifle team snatched a close victory on November 5, when it defeated intra-state rival Murray State, 6164-6161. UK freshman Bradley Wheeldon continued his hot fall streak, tying MSU’s Morgan Hicks for individual honors with a score of 1555.

The match was close all through smallbore competition, where the Cats notched a total of 4617. Murray State, however, overpowered the Cats in the first event, finishing with a season-high 4626. Hicks notched an 1166 to lead all competitors in the event.

The young Kentucky squad bounced back in air rifle as senior Taryn Lewis tallied a 388, setting a personal best. Wheeldon’s 392 was good enough to grab individual event honors, as the Wildcats overpowered the Racers, 1547-1535.

“We need to work on prone and kneeling positions in smallbore,” Coach Harry Mullins said. “That’s where we’re giving up a lot of easy points. I feel like we can pull that together in the coming weeks. I’m impressed at our consistent air rifle scores, despite the fact that we continue to juggle the lineups.”

The Cats continue fall action on Friday, Nov. 10, when they play host to Air Force. The match gets underway at 3 p.m. at the Buell Armory, located on the UK campus.
