The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team broke its two-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over SoutheasternConference-rival LSU on Friday, October 20. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 12-4-0 on the season and 5-3 in conferenceplay.
Kentucky got the early lead on the Tigers, when sophomore Keri Boyce scored her 11th goal of the season in the 24th minuteoff an Aimee Brown assist. The Tigers battled back quickly when Somalia Lindsay put it between the pipes in the 36th minute. LSUsophomore Melissa Shelton was credited with the assist.
Kentucky came back from the break with a renewed intensity, as senior Jen Reese scorched the net from the top of the box tonotch the game-winning goal. The Tigers couldn’t find the net again in the game, taking only two shots in the second half due to astifling UK defense. The Cats put the final touch on the win, when with one-second remaining Elizabeth Ramsey zinged the ball pastLSU keeper Bonnie Otillio off a Lauren Russell assist to make the final tally 3-1.
“We had a very lackluster first half,” Coach Warren Lipka said. “We picked it up in the second half and played at the levelwe’re capable of. We have to do that for 90 minutes every game.”
Senior Jen Reese got her 80th career start in the game. With a start on Sunday, she will tie Kim LaBelle for third place on thecareer starts list with 81.
The Cats are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 22, when they play host to Arkansas. The matchup will close out the home schedule forKentucky and will mark the final home appearance for UK seniors Jamie Dellbringge, Emily Oetjen, Jen Reese and Margo Hafer.Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
