No. 24 women’s soccer shutout Cincinnati 1-0 to earn spot in record books.

CINCINATTI (Oct. 8, 1999) — The 24th-ranked University ofKentucky women’s soccer team captured its eighthstraight victory, setting a new school record as the Catsdefeated the Cincinnati Bearcats at Meyers Field 1-0.

The previous UK record for consecutive victories by either the men’s orwomen’s soccer team was seven. In 1993, the UK women captured sevenstraight games.

UK (9-2-1) and the Bearcats played to a first half stalemate before AnnieGage broke a scoreless tie for the Cats.

The sophomore forward netted her eighth goal of the year at the 77:14 markwhen she fired the ball past UC goalkeeper Katrina Smolarczyk and into theright corner of the net. Gage was five-yards out on the left side of the goalwhen she shot the ball past a diving Smolarczyk and into the opposite cornerof the goal. Junior Deanna Stayton was credited with an assist on the play.

“This match could have gone either way tonight,” UK coach Warren Lipkasaid. “Both teams really fought hard out there tonight but we found a way towin. Beth Wells was outstanding in goal for us tonight and really gave us achance to win this game.

Playing in her hometown, Wells turned in her finest performance of theseason, recording a season-high ten saves. The shutout was the junior’sfourth of the season.

UC (5-7) outshot the Cats 10-8, while Smolarczyk made four saves for theBearcats.

UK returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 10, when the Cats travel to Nashville,Tenn., to face SEC-rival Vanderbilt. The match will begin at 1 p.m. (EST).
